This is a short report from the Shadow DX'ers Streymoy Island activation.
Unfortunately the propagation was elsewhere during most of our stay in the Faroe Islands. We arrived Thursday and went on the air during the late afternoon. This first night we had weak propagation but it extended well beyond sunset. We worked around 30 stations that night and enjoyed decent propagation Friday morning with an additional 140 stations logged before the band closed completely. Saturday through Monday the band was completely closed!
Our equipment was FT-897 + BV2001 AMP (Thanks to Ólavur 52SD234) and the antenna was a full wave loop (similar to Bambi). Signal reports received was in general 3-4 S-units higher than the reports we sent. It seems like our signal was getting out fairly well while incoming stations were in general very weak. The total number of stations logged was around 170.
The weather in 52 division during our stay was very challenging for the antennas. All installations took severe beating by the heavy wind and we had to fix and repair the loop several times during the weekend.
We had some great moments in Torshavn visiting Ólavur, 52SD234 who greeted us with great hospitality and friendship. I have known Ólavur for many years by voice, so it was great to finally meet in person. We also had a great time visiting the Cafe Natur bar and Eclipse and Rex nightclubs. Torshavn might be a small place with only 20.000 citizens, but they sure know how to party! :)
The Shadow DXers are once again on the way to show up from a nice DX spot - Streymoy Island (EU-018) which is the main island of the Faroe Islands.
In recent years activity has been very low from the Faroe islands so this might be a nice opportunity to say hi into the cold North Atlantic Ocean. As usual Chris 21AT116 and Patrik 21AT139 will be equipped with the famous Shadow DXers activation utilties and certainly will try to make some noise from there.
