Speaking to ANA – MPA, Dimitris Vassalos, pulmonologist, doctor of the University of Athens and research associate of the School of Health and Welfare (SEYP) TEI Athens, underlines that it has been observed by medical studies that increasing respiratory diseases, skin, muscle and joints in people living or working in areas with air conditioning.

According to Mr. Vassalos, the most common health problems in Greece with household air conditioners are: pharyngitis (persistent lasting two weeks), rhinitis due to dryness of mucous from the air recycled by the air conditioner, headache, cooling muscle, worsening arthritis and neuritis, skin dryness and the appearance of skin diseases, the occurrence of allergies from mold and dust from the filters of the air conditioner, dry eye and conjunctivitis.
Also, from air conditioners in hospitals, hotels and workplaces, due to poor maintenance of storage and transport systems of water in the air, they can grow germs that cause a dangerous pneumonia, the Legionela (Legionnaires’ disease).
Mr. Vassalos explains what to do, so the use of air conditioners have no impact on our health:
- Proper maintenance of air conditioners.
- Cleaning filters at regular intervals.
- Set up to 25 degrees Celsius (ideally temperature 25 to 26 degrees Celsius and 65% humidity).
- Frequent ventilation of the space (eg slightly open the window constantly).
- No sudden alternations of cold – warm and vice versa.
Finally, first not put the air conditioner at a very low temperature and also the turn off 20 minutes before out of the home or car in order to adapt the organization to the change in temperature.
