You can experience dramatic health improvement, if you quit eating sugar foods for just nine days, beside your lower calorie intake, according to a new study.
Striking changes in the levels of blood pressure and cholesterol have occurred when tested on a small group of obese children and adolescents, although they had not lost a gram of body weight.
This finding suggests that sugar is metabolically harmful not because of the calories, but because of how the body effects on it.
The new study, published in the «Obesity» journal, examined the effects of sugar restriction in metabolic syndrome – a group of diseases and disorders that coexist in a human and increase the risk of heart attack, stroke and type 2 diabetes.
Disorders of which may include one suffers hypertension, increased waist circumference, elevated triglycerides, reduced levels of ‘good ‘cholesterol (HDL) and elevated blood sugar levels (pre-diabetes or diabetes).
The study involved 43 children, aged 9-18 years who were obese and suffered from at least one other parameter of the metabolic syndrome.
Scientists from Benioff Children’s Hospital at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF), submitted children in a series of tests and then asked them to follow a diet faithfully for nine days, which contained all sorts of junk food but no dessert.
In fact, the new diet contained what used to eat children, and even hot dogs, pizza and French fries, but the sweets were replaced with other carbohydrates (eg bread, pasta) and total calories, fats and proteins have remained stable.
Moreover, the researchers weighed daily children and when observed that someone was beginning to lose weight, they increase food intake, because they did not want changes in health indicators as a result of slimming.
They were also asked to refrain from increasing their level of physical activity.
